The season is drawing to a close with young Hen Harriers now mostly fledged. The unremitting requirement for food has kept the adults busy for weeks, effectively providing the protein building blocks in the shape of small birds and voles. Here is an image of a pair having just completed the extraordinary mid-air food-pass ritual where the female literally inverts herself under the male to catch the prey which he drops. Not content with the latest offering she squeals at him to get more and the male dutifully heads off again for another hunting foray.
